自然指数（Nature Index）是依托于全球顶级期刊（《自然》系列、《科学》《细胞》等82种自然科学类期刊），统计各高校、科研院所在国际上最具影响力的研究型学术期刊上发表论文数量的数据库。自然指数是评价各高校及其它学术机构科研能力的客观量化标准之一，是衡量各单位顶尖学术产出的重要指标，在全球范围内有较大影响力。

　　自然指数按照学科分类主要包括化学（20种期刊）、地球与环境科学（16种期刊）、生命科学（43种期刊）以及物理学（24种期刊）。因《自然》、《科学》等综合类期刊涉及多个学科而被重复统计，因此学科分类中期刊总数超过82种。
